With a PhD from the University of Sydney, Walter has worked at many of Canberra’s prominent educational and cultural institutions. Walter taught history, philosophy and animal ethics at the ANU’s Centre for Continuing Education. In his philosophy courses Walter encouraged students to think deeply about ethics in general and their own ethical beliefs and motivations.
Walter is driven by a vision of a world where animals are treated according to fundamental principles of justice, and where animals’ autonomy and sentience are recognised in law.
Walter not only pioneered the first-ever animal-ethics course offered by the ANU, but also helped his partner establish Australia’s first ever Animal Defenders Office, a community legal centre that specialises in animal law.
Walter is a long-term member of the Animal Justice Party, and he believes strongly in its values of ‘animals, people, and planet’. He has been a vegan for many years, motivated by concern for our planet and its inhabitants.
The Animal Justice Party offers a genuine alternative to other parties because it encourages people to rise above self-interest and to think of others. Walter is therefore proud to stand for election and he says that he is running for the Animal Justice Party to ensure that people who care about animal protection, and those who want to make the world a better place for all, will have someone to vote for.
